INTA Annual Meeting Update, Barcelona, May 2017

Policy Counselor

MarkMonitor representatives were proud to attend the International Trademark Association (INTA) Annual Meeting from May 21 to 24 in Barcelona, Spain. With 10,668 registrants, the 2017 Annual Meeting was the largest ever held by INTA. It was also the largest for MarkMonitor and our first as a Clarivate Analytics flagship brand, with 15 attendees representing our operations in London, Boise, San Francisco, and Barcelona. We enjoyed the opportunity to meet with our clients and partners, to engage with the INTA community and support the mission of the organization through our committee leadership and by facilitating education sessions.

In addition to attending and leading committee meetings and moderating a table topic session, MarkMonitor representatives attended education sessions on topics ranging from trends in enforcement online to social media to unique solutions for common shipping and customs challenges in the world of counterfeit goods. We are on the lookout for new trends that we can apply to benefit our client’s brand protection experience.

INTA MESSAGE AND MISSION: The Consumer Takes Center Stage

The key message of the meeting, presented at opening ceremonies by INTA President, Joe Ferretti (PepsiCo), and INTA CEO, Etienne Sanz de Acedo, was the evolution of brand protection to brand stewardship. Mr. Ferretti, using examples from his own company, discussed ways in which brand owners can more fully embrace the global and holistic importance of brands, not only to companies, but also to consumers and people who interact with brands as a source of information and trust.

As a consumer-focused brand protection company, MarkMonitor was thrilled to hear Mr. Sanz de Acedo list consumer trust as one of INTA’s strategic priorities. Other priorities in the 2018 to 2021 strategic plan include promoting the value of trademarks and brands and embracing innovation and change.

As a member of the leadership team for the Internet Committee at INTA, we were also proud and excited to hear Mr. Sanz de Acedo highlight and champion the Association’s work on internet issues. The Association has been a key voice in promoting brand interests within internet governance forums. He also highlighted anticounterfeiting and antipiracy work, which is an important focus of the brand and consumer protection community, as a whole.

FOCUS ON MARKMONITOR: Committee Work, Partnerships and Education Sessions

As one of the subcommittee chairs on the Internet Committee, we have a front row seat to the importance of internet policy-making to brand protection and enforcement efforts. Committee discussion at the meeting included the following hot topics:

  • Access to website ownership data in light of new European Privacy laws.
  • Continued priority access to proactive brand protection strategies such as sunrise domain name registration.
  • UDRP policy reviews.
  • Geographic terms and indications on the internet.
  • The balance of trademark rights and free expression on the internet.
  • Subsequent rounds of the new gTLD program.

As brand owners become more aware of how deeply these complex policies affect overall enforcement strategies, the conversation within organizations such as INTA, which set our priorities and advocacy points as brand owners, become increasingly critical. We were proud to facilitate and moderate a robust discussion among brand owners at the ICANN Policy session during this Annual Meeting, and to lead a table topic discussion titled: Debunking ICANN Policies for Brand Owners.

During the event, we also met with our colleagues in government, community leaders, trademark office representatives, INTA board members, marketplace and social media platform representatives and more to share our experiences and to build stronger partnerships. Our work on behalf of several hundred clients allows us to build and communicate a unique perspective of the brand protection environment. We can identify patterns and trends, as well as common roadblocks and challenges. This allows us to work with partners to build global, industry-wide solutions for brands.

We enjoyed being in Barcelona with our clients, colleagues and friends! We had the pleasure of, once again, sponsoring the GLINTA reception, hosted by Mayer Brown and benefitting The Trevor Project. We also joined CompuMark, our sister Clarivate Analytics company, for a customer appreciation celebration at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya. We also enjoyed rooftop drinks at sunset, dinners on the beach and tapas on Las Ramblas. In short, we really enjoyed our time with the INTA community. We extend our thanks to our INTA hosts for choosing Barcelona as the meeting location and for organizing a successful event.

Look for us at the INTA Leadership Meeting in Washington, DC in November.
