MarkMonitor recently joined our colleagues and friends  at the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) 52nd public meeting in Singapore.  As promised, the ICANN community has a lot on its plate for 2015, and at this first full meeting of the year, we are all jumping into the work with both feet. Here are some of the main issues for brand owners:  Sorting out the long-awaited transition from U.S. Government oversight to a truly multi-stakeholder model of governance; ensuring Registrant data (Whois) accuracy, accessibility and privacy (where appropriate); launching reviews of the new gTLD program; and protecting/preserving the robust... 2014 was a big year for us and for our clients.  The new gTLD program forced us to rethink, reprioritize and implement new and different strategies to protect our brands online.  The uncertainty largely behind us, and with more information at our fingertips about just how well (or not) brands are faring in the new environment, it’s time to look forward to what we can do in 2015 to fix what’s broken, throw away what’s useless, fight for what’s important and generally continue to try and make navigating the new Internet landscape as smooth as possible for brand owners and consumers... MarkMonitor has long championed the importance of smart brands safeguarding... Read More

Of course, much has stayed the same too. Concerns related to domain name security and domain portfolio management are still important. With so much going on in this past year though, it was difficult to keep the list to just 10 items. But here... Read More
We released our latest Shopping Report this week, examining consumer purchase intent and the demographics of those who acquire counterfeit goods online. The report focuses on a category that is heavily targeted by counterfeiters—apparel and luxury goods—and surveys almost nine million shopping sessions during a nine month period, focusing on the search terms employed by shoppers in order to understand what they were looking to purchase. We classified terms like “cheap,” “discount” or “outlet” as bargain-hunting terms and terms like “counterfeit,” “fake” or “replica” as fake-seeking terms. We then examined the aggregated traffic for shoppers using both sets of terms to... Read More
