2016 Domain Year in Review
It’s that time of year when the domain industry reflects on 2016 and makes predictions for 2017. Last year I made a number of predictions. I knew that new gTLDs would continue to dominate discussions throughout the year. I anticipated that new gTLD use would increase. I knew there would be important developments in the ICANN community. Finally, I anticipated that companies would continue to face advanced security threats. Here are the details on my top five domain highlights from 2016: Launches, Launches and More Launches It was a busy year for domains. Not only did new gTLDs continue to launch... Read More

MarkMonitor supports brand holders' efforts regarding .feedback registry
In the capacity that MarkMonitor has as an ICANN accredited registrar, we have observed numerous issues with registrations in the .feedback registry.  These issues date back to the initial launch of .feedback earlier this year. As a result of the harm our clients and other brand holders have faced, we have provided our support to the filing of a Public Interest Commitment Dispute Resolution Procedure (PICDRP) with ICANN. This is a review process, which ICANN established as part of its new gTLD program, designed to help parties arbitrate these kinds of issues with registries. This is an unprecedented move for MarkMonitor and our clients... Read More

Let the IANA Transition Proceed
The United States is not ceding “control” of the Internet. No foreign government is going to take over “control” of the Internet. The Internet is NOT going to crumble. Now that we have dispensed with the rhetoric some in the political world are putting forth as truths, let’s talk about the reality of the long-planned transition of the IANA functions currently provided by the US government. When the Internet was first created and funded by the US government decades ago, both ICANN (the bottom-up policy development body) and IANA (the technical operation of the root zone server of the Internet) were setup to oversee... ICANN 56 Helsinki Recap
MarkMonitor joined colleagues from around the world once again in June to participate in ICANN 56, held in Helsinki, Finland.  This was the first “Policy Forum” style ICANN meeting, a shorter and (potentially) more focused meeting structure dedicated to community work on ICANN policies as well as cross-constituency dialogue.  Overall, the new structure was well received; a number of fruitful discussions and meaningful results contributed to a feeling of accomplishment and progress.  Photo by KFP (Own work) [CC BY-SA 3.0], via Wikimedia Commons Here are our highlights from the meeting. ccTLD Strategies for Global Expansion
By 2020 the number of internet users worldwide is expected to surpass five billion. This will be 64% of the planet, a huge jump from the .04% of us who were online back in 1995 and the 46% online today. These vast numbers are supported by a growing domain name space. While there’s been a lot of attention paid to new gTLDs, the growth in domain name registrations has also been powered by the growth of country-code top-level domains known as ccTLDs. There are over 300 million registered domain names of which almost half are ccTLDs. The most popular ccTLDs are... Read More
